Al Horford has signed a two-year, $11.6 million contract with the Warriors, ending his 4-year stint in Boston and his 7 years in total with the team. In his time with the team, he averaged 11 points, 6 rebounds, made an all-star team, an all-defensive team, and won a championship.
Horford may not have numbers that will get his jersey retired with the team, but his legacy goes far beyond the statistics. His leadership, veteran command over the locker room, hustle on both sides of the floor, and willingness to sacrifice his role for the team are all reasons why he will be beloved in Boston. Horford had been on many deep playoff runs with the team and was the all-time leader in playoff games played without a championship before winning in 2024.
With Horford gone, Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum are the clear elder statesmen of the team. They had grown into more vocal leaders after the departure of Marcus Smart but now will have to take an even bigger leap in that role with Horford's voice no longer present. Jayson Tatum always spoke glowingly about Al, stating that he always set the tone for the team and taught him how to be a pro. Now that role falls on him and Jaylen Brown. Being the best players on the team as well as a champion will earn them plenty of credibility, but this is the first time both will have the pressure of being the unquestioned veteran leaders of the team.
Al Horford represented what it means to be a Celtic. His heart, determination, and leadership will always be remembered throughout all of Boston and the Celtics franchise. As the team moves forward, his impact will be felt in the banner he helped raise as well as the culture of accountability and selflessness that will be passed down.
